{"id":25054,"date":"2015-11-14T11:11:33","date_gmt":"2015-11-14T19:11:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/allsolutionsnetwork.org\/blog\/?p=25054"},"modified":"2015-11-14T11:11:33","modified_gmt":"2015-11-14T19:11:33","slug":"go-green","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/allsolutionsnetwork.org\/blog\/go-green\/","title":{"rendered":"GO GREEN!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 10pt; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the much older lady that she should bring her own grocery bags, because plastic bags are not good for the environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"> The woman apologized to the young girl and explained, <span style=\"color: #333399;\">&#8220;We didn&#8217;t have this &#8216;green thing&#8217; back in my earlier days.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"> The young clerk responded, <span style=\"color: #a10623;\">&#8220;That&#8217;s our problem today.\u00a0 Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations.&#8221;&#8230; <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"> The older lady said that she was right&#8211;our generation didn&#8217;t have the &#8220;green thing&#8221; in its day.\u00a0 The older lady went on to explain:\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store.\u00a0 The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333399; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"> So they really were recycled.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"> But we didn&#8217;t have the &#8220;green thing&#8221; back in our day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"> Grocery stores bagged our groceries in brown paper bags that we reused for numerous things.<\/span>\u00a0 Most memorable besides household garbage bags was the use of brown paper bags as book covers for our school books.\u00a0 This was to ensure that public property (the books provided for our use by the school) was not defaced by our scribbling.\u00a0 Then we were able to personalize our books on the brown paper bags.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"> But, too bad we didn&#8217;t do the &#8220;green thing&#8221; back then.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"> We walked up stairs because we didn&#8217;t have an escalator in every store and office building.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #333399;\">We walked to the grocery store and didn&#8217;t climb into a 300-hp. machine every time we had\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333399; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">to go two blocks.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"> But she was right.\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t have the &#8220;green thing&#8221; in our day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"> Back then we washed the baby&#8217;s diapers because we didn&#8217;t have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy-gobbling machine burning up 220 volts.<\/span>\u00a0 Wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days.\u00a0 Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"> But that young lady is right; we didn&#8217;t have the &#8220;green thing&#8221; back in our day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"> Back then we had one TV or radio in the house&#8211;not a TV in every room. \u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"> And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #333399;\">In the kitchen we blended and stirred by hand because we didn&#8217;t have electric machines to do everything for us.<\/span>\u00a0 When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, <span style=\"color: #333399;\">we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Back then, we didn&#8217;t fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn.<\/span> We used a push mower that ran on human power.\u00a0 We exercised by working so we didn&#8217;t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"> But she&#8217;s right; we didn&#8217;t have the &#8220;green thing&#8221; back then.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"> We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blade in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade was dull.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"> But we didn&#8217;t have the &#8220;green thing&#8221; back then.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"> Back then, <span style=\"color: #000080;\">people took the streetcar or a bus, and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service in the family&#8217;s $45,000 SUV or van<\/span>, which cost what a whole house did before the &#8220;green thing.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"> We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances.<\/span>\u00a0 And we didn&#8217;t need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 23,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest burger joint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #000080; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"> But isn&#8217;t it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn&#8217;t have the &#8220;green thing&#8221; back then?<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"> Please forward or share this to other\u00a0selfish old people\u00a0who need lessons from young people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"> We don&#8217;t like being old in the first place, <strong><em>so it doesn&#8217;t take much to tick us off&#8230;<\/em><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #a10623;\"><strong><em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"> Especially from a smart ass who can&#8217;t make change without the cash register telling them how much!<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the much older lady that she should bring her own grocery bags, because plastic bags are not good for the environment.
